Fostering a Welcoming Atmosphere

At Utah Eye Associates, we strive to create a warm, friendly, welcoming environment that will help children relax. We understand some children develop a fear of doctors' visits, and we take special measures to ensure that even the youngest members of your family will feel comfortable coming into our office.

Regular doctors' appointments are an essential part of maintaining overall heath, and properly caring for your eyes is an important part of establishing this healthy habit. Diseases and conditions of the eye often result in no symptoms, making them harder to identify and treat without regular check-ups. Like any health condition, early detection and treatment of eye and vision disorders are crucial to the long-term outcome of each patient.

Common Pediatric Eye Conditions

Some diseases affect the eyes of children more often than others. Common pediatric eye conditions include:

  • Amblyopia - Also known as lazy eye, amblyopia is a condition in which the eyes cannot properly coordinate their movement and alignment to maintain parallel focus.

  • Strabismus - Also known as turned or crossed eye, this disorder means the eyes cannot see straight ahead at the same time.

  • Myopia - Also called nearsightedness, myopia causes children to see up close more clearly than in the distance.

  • Retinopathy of Prematurity - This retinal disease affects babies who were born prematurely, and results in abnormal development of the blood vessels in the eyes. Complications can lead to strabismus, myopia, cataracts, and in severe cases, retinal detachment and blindness.

  • Congenital Cataract - Unlike age-related cataracts, this condition causes the lens of the eye to be cloudy or opaque at birth, or become cloudly shortly after.

  • Stargardt's Disease - Stargardt's disease is one of the most common forms of early onset macular degeneration, and is characterized by a reduction in central vision while peripheral vision remains unchanged. The disease is caused by the death of photoreceptor cells in the macula, the central portion of the retina.
