Utah Eye Associates - Cataracts

Our cataract treatments can safely restore clear vision.

What are Cataracts?

Our eyes contain lenses made of protein. These clear structures sit just behind the pupil, and allow light to enter the eye and travel to the retina.

Cataracts occur when the proteins that form the lens clump together. Once cataracts form, they cause fuzzy or blurred vision as they block and distort the light that enters through the lens.

Cataracts are usually associated with aging - more than half of people over the age of 80 will suffer from a cataract - but can also be caused by injury, illness, or even birth defects. Cataracts can occur in one eye or both eyes, but having a cataract in one eye does not cause it to spread to the other. Cataracts are also more common in people with diabetes.

Symptoms & Diagnosis

The symptoms of cataracts can include blurred vision, and colors may also lose their vibrancy, or appear faded. You may begin to have poor night vision or see a halo around lights, or start seeing a double image in one or both eyes. Frequent prescription changes may be needed as the lens of the eye becomes cloudy.  If any of these symptoms sound familiar, contact our office immediately to schedule an appointment.

In order to diagnose and treat cataracts, eye care professionals recommend an annual dilated eye exam. Examinations also help screen for other age-related vision problems, like macular degeneration and glaucoma, two of the leading causes of blindness. Early diagnosis and treatment is imperative in minimizing the damage incurred by an eye disease.

Cataract Treatment

You will feel right at home from the moment you enter our modern, comfortable facility. Dr. Masihdas will listen closely to your concerns, and perform an in-depth eye examination using the latest technology and sophisticated equipment. He will take the time to go over your test results with you, answer your questions, and explain all of your treatment options. In the early stages of cataracts, eye drops and special corrective eye wear prescriptions can help you maintain vision. At some point, it may become necessary to remove the crystalline lens, and replace it with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL). We offer blade-free procedures including the lenSX, an innovative laser system that can remove cataracts with a customized 3-D surgical platform.
