Utah Eye Associates - Diabetic Eye Care

Diabetes requires special eye care. We can meet your needs and help you maintain your ocular health.

Specialized Care for Diabetic Eyes

Diabetes can significantly impact many aspects of health, especially vision, because it can cause severe damage to the delicate blood vessels and tissues of the retina. The retina is the area of the eye that receives light and transmits nerve impulses to the brain through the optic nerve. You can think of it much like the image that forms on film inside an analog camera. Obviously, if the film is damaged, clear images will not develop.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, or are at increased risk of developing diabetes, it is imperative you build a relationship with a trusted eye care specialist. Our highly trained team can provide the specialized testing and care you need to protect your vision. Dr. Masihdas will take the time to discuss your unique needs. He will make you feel at ease, and answer all of your questions. He routinely provides diabetic counseling on healthy lifestyle habits, like proper diet and exercise, and can help you understand exactly how diabetes can affect your eyes. Dr. Masihdas can coordinate with your primary care provider and address any special needs you may have.

The Importance of Regular Check-ups

It is especially important for our diabetic patients to receive regular eye examinations. Patients with diabetes are at an increased risk for retinopathy, macular disease, cataracts, dry eye disease and fluctuating vision. Left untreated, these conditions may result in blindness. Diabetes is typically classified into three categories regarding eye care needs: pre-diabetic, moderate, and severe. Pre-diabetics (those at risk for developing diabetes) should receive comprehensive eye exams once every year. Moderate to severe diabetics should undergo eye exams at least twice a year in order to avoid potentially irreversible damage to the eyes. If you have advanced diabetes, you need to visit our office at least every three months.

Why Choose Utah Eye Associates?

Diabetes is a complex disease and needs to be properly managed so that you can experience the best vision possible. Diabetic patients are at a greater risk of developing associated eye problems, including retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, optic nerve problems, and dry eyes. We are the only eye clinic in Utah that offers diabetic eye care, dedicated to diagnosing, managing and treating the problems associated with diabetes.
