A man sitting in his car and looking at his phoneHave you recently decided to take the leap with LASIK? If so, then you might have a ton of questions that you need answered before you can fully commit to a laser vision correction option.

If you have questions like, “When can I drive after LASIK?” then keep reading. Our Salt Lake City, UT, optometric physician, Dr. David Masihdas, will answer all of your burning LASIK questions.

Is LASIK safe?

Yes, LASIK is very safe. The FDA approved the procedure in 1998 after decades of research and refinement. As an FDA-approved procedure, LASIK isn’t just safe, it’s incredibly effective, too.

Recent research suggests that 99% of LASIK patients have 20/40 vision or better following the procedure. Additionally, LASIK has a remarkable patient satisfaction rate of 96%.

What is LASIK surgery like?

Our Salt Lake City eye surgeon begins by putting numbing drops into your eyes. Within minutes, your eyes will be completely numb, and then we can begin the procedure.

First, Dr. Mashidas will use a high-powered laser to make a tiny incision in the corneal epithelium, creating a thin flap. Dr. Mashidas will then gently pull the epithelial flap back to expose the inner tissue of the cornea. With unmatched precision, Dr. Mashidas will reshape the cornea before placing the epithelial flap back into position.

The process of reshaping the eye allows light to refract better in the cornea. The result is practically perfect vision in less than 15 minutes per eye.

Can I get LASIK in both eyes at the same appointment?

We recommend that patients who need corrective surgery get both eyes treated at the same time. This is the most cost-effective and convenient method for most patients to improve their vision.

When can I drive after LASIK?

Even though you will notice an improvement in your sight immediately, you cannot drive yourself home after LASIK surgery. Instead, arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from our Salt Lake City office.

You can start driving as soon as your vision gets clearer. For most patients, that is approximately 24 hours after their procedure. If you feel like your vision is not clear enough after 24 hours, then play it safe–have someone else drive you to your follow-up appointment.

How long does LASIK last?

LASIK permanently improves your vision. Typically, declining vision after LASIK isn’t related to the surgery–it’s related to your age at the time of your procedure. This is because the lenses in our eyes naturally lose flexibility over time. So, as we get older, we have a harder time getting our eyes to focus on up-close objects.

Patients in their 20s may enjoy improved vision for more than 30 years. Patients in their 40s, however, may notice that only 5-10 years elapse before they need reading glasses.
